Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe says 100,000 LP gas cylinders, equivalent to 1,500 metric tons, will be distributed today in an effort to reduce the current market shortage.
He confirmed that two additional gas shipments are due to arrive in the coming days:
-
A vessel carrying 3,900 metric tons of LP gas is scheduled to reach the island on February 25
-
Another shipment of 3,700 metric tons is expected on February 28
Meanwhile, a special meeting is scheduled for today between ministry officials and representatives of Laugfs Gas to address the ongoing supply crisis.
The Minister warned that legal action will be taken if the company fails to resume adequate distribution. He added that Laugfs Gas has been given until March 12 to ensure sufficient stocks are available for all customers.
Authorities have also reiterated that strict measures will be enforced against any attempts to create artificial shortages or inconvenience consumers.
