The National Dengue Control Unit has reported 15 dengue-related deaths so far this year, as Sri Lanka grapples with a significant surge in infections.
According to Consultant Community Physician Dr. Prashola Samaraweera, a total of 27,702 dengue cases have been recorded island-wide, with the Western Province reporting the highest number at 4,702 cases.
Dr. Samaraweera noted that the country is currently experiencing an average of 1,300 new cases per week, raising serious public health concerns.
In response, health authorities are set to launch a nationwide mosquito eradication campaign from June 30 to July 5. The program will target 101 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across 16 districts, aiming to curb the spread of the disease before it escalates further.
Officials urge the public to cooperate with health workers and maintain clean, mosquito-free environments as part of the national effort to control the outbreak.
