20% of CEB Engineers Have Left the Country in Recent Years

August 16, 2025

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has revealed that around 20 percent of its engineers have left the country over the past three years in search of overseas employment.

CEB media spokesperson Dhammika Wimalaratne said that 226 engineers have migrated during this period, with many securing opportunities in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Of those who resigned, 85 percent were electrical engineers, 8 percent mechanical engineers, and 7 percent civil engineers, he added.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Electricity Consumers’ Association, Sanjeewa Dhammika, alleged that the CEB is planning to recruit 60 new engineers despite already having engineers available internally. He further claimed that the recruitment process has been carried out in violation of established procedures.
