250,000 SMEs Have Collapsed Due to Parate Law – MP Ravi Karunanayake

July 7, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has claimed that approximately 250,000 small and medium-scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) have faced economic collapse due to the enforcement of the Parate law, warning of dire consequences for employment and economic stability if urgent action is not taken.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake congratulated former MP Harshana Suriyapperuma on his recent appointment as Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, stating that the time has come for him to put his knowledge and experience into practical use.

“When the current government was in opposition, they demanded the Parate law be enforced to ensure accountability,” he said. “Now that they are in power, it’s time to act responsibly and fairly.”

Karunanayake emphasized the need to depoliticize decisions regarding national financial policy, especially in light of the growing economic hardships faced by entrepreneurs and job creators across the country.

He further warned that if no corrective measures are taken, the ongoing wave of SME failures will lead to a surge in unemployment, further aggravating the country’s fragile economic situation.

“This is not just a financial issue; it is a social and economic crisis that affects millions of families. We need thoughtful and balanced solutions,” he added.
