400 Salt Containers Held at Colombo Port for Over 45 Days Amid Import Delays

August 15, 2025

The Sri Lanka Salt Producers Association (SLSPA) has raised concerns over 400 containers—holding nearly 28,000 metric tons of imported salt—remaining uncleared at the Colombo Port for more than 45 days.

National Organizer of the SLSPA, Chaminda Rusiru Maliyedda, told the media that the imports were arranged from India to address a severe domestic salt shortage. However, clearance delays have stalled distribution.

According to Maliyedda, the issue stems from discrepancies related to the Bill of Lading date, with the primary fault lying with the shipping company. He urged government intervention, noting that both the Finance Ministry and the Health Ministry have the authority to expedite the release.

“We are compliant taxpayers, and we expect a concession from the government. Releasing these stocks will benefit consumers, as we plan to sell the salt at an affordable price,” he said.

He further revealed that repeated requests for discussions with relevant authorities have gone unanswered.

Sri Lanka’s decision to import salt followed a steep drop in local production due to adverse weather and other factors. Two consignments have already arrived at the Colombo Port, but remain stranded amid the ongoing dispute.
