The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) reported that legal action was taken yesterday against 50 shops found selling rice at prices exceeding the government-imposed controlled rates.
CAA Director Asela Bandara announced that enforcement operations targeting those selling rice above the set price or hoarding stocks will be intensified starting today.
The crackdown follows the issuance of a Gazette Extraordinary notification, signed by the CAA Chairman, outlining the regulations. Bandara emphasized that shopkeepers are required to prominently display the prices of rice.
Shops caught violating the controlled pricing policy will face fines of Rs. 100,000, as part of efforts to ensure compliance and prevent exploitation of consumers.
