Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism has confirmed that 59 Sri Lankans serving in the Russian Army have been killed in the Ukraine warfront.
The revelation was made during today’s (07) parliamentary session in response to a question raised by MP Sivagnanam Shritharan. Citing reports from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia, the Minister stated that a total of 554 Sri Lankans had been recruited by the Russian military for the war in Ukraine, with no evidence suggesting coercion.
As of January 20, 2025, 59 Sri Lankans have lost their lives in combat. The Minister further noted that details of these individuals would be recorded in the parliamentary Hansard.
