The government has announced plans to celebrate the 77th National Independence Day at Independence Square in Colombo with a focus on minimizing expenses.
Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, emphasized the importance of marking the occasion with pride and grandeur to uphold the nation’s dignity. However, he stressed the need for cost efficiency, given the ongoing economic challenges facing the country.
At the first organizing committee meeting for the event, held today (30) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Auditorium, the Minister noted that last year’s celebrations cost Rs. 107 million. He called for significant reductions in this year’s expenses while maintaining the event’s importance and accessibility to the public.
The government also plans to allow the public to witness the celebrations, adding a participatory dimension to the event.
