8-Year-Old Author Vihara Publishes Her First Book, ‘Pokunata Watunu Upandina Thegga’

October 29, 2025

Vihara Dhahamdhi Wijewardana, an 8-year-old children’s author and Grade 3 student at Musaeus College, Colombo, has released her debut storybook titled ‘Pokunata Watunu Upandina Thegga'(The Birthday Gift That Fell into the Pond). The launch of her book coincided with the celebration of World Children’s Day, making the occasion even more special.

What sets this book apart is that Vihara not only wrote the story but also created all the illustrations herself. A passionate reader from an early age, she finds inspiration for her writing through her love of books. She has also been drawing since she first learned to write, bringing her imagination vividly to life through words and art.

The first draft of her story was written when she was in Grade 2. With her dedication and enthusiasm, that early effort has now become a published book printed by Sadeepa Publishers. “The Birthday Gift That Fell into the Pond” is available at Sadeepa Bookstores across the country.

Marking a proud milestone, Dhahamdhi presented the first copy of her book to her school on her 8th birthday.

The book was edited and reviewed by renowned children’s story writer, child Psychological counsellor, and lecturer in teacher training, Latha Gamage, who also wrote the foreword to the publication.
