83% of Deaths in Sri Lanka Linked to Non-Communicable Diseases

The Ministry of Health has disclosed that 83% of all deaths in Sri Lanka are caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Key findings from the data include:

  • 35% of individuals over 60 suffer from high blood pressure.

  • Nearly 60,000 people experience strokes annually due to undiagnosed hypertension, with approximately 4,000 either dying or becoming permanently disabled.

  • 20% of the adult population has diabetes, with 41% not seeking any treatment.

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness and early detection to combat these alarming health concerns.
