The Ministry of Health Sri Lanka says approximately 84% of Sri Lanka’s population has expressed willingness to donate their eyes.
According to the Ministry, the National Eye Bank Sri Lanka, established 15 years ago, has so far received around 17,000 eye lenses.
These donations have reportedly been used in approximately 12,000 eye transplant surgeries.
Health authorities also stated that between 4,000 and 5,000 lenses have been provided to other countries in response to international requests.
The Ministry emphasized that the National Eye Bank is now recognized internationally, with continuous demand for eye lenses from countries including Singapore and South Africa, as well as several other Asian nations.
