99% of Disaster-Damaged Irrigation Systems Restored, Says Mahaweli Authority

December 24, 2025

The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has announced that 99% of irrigation systems damaged by recent disasters have now been restored.

Director General of the Authority, H.M.J.K. Herath, stated that a specialised reconstruction methodology is being used to rebuild damaged embankments of small tanks managed by the Mahaweli Authority.

He further noted that the Authority has decided to install special sluice gates at locations where tank embankments were breached or overflowed during the disasters. The objective of these sluice gates is to protect embankments and prevent collapses during sudden rises in water levels.

The Director General also confirmed that temporary repairs to tank embankments have already been completed, ensuring that water can be successfully collected for the upcoming Maha cultivation season.
