In the end, the Secretary of the party, Shyamala Perera, informed UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe that, due to an inability to reach a unanimous decision, she was compelled to nominate Faizer Mustapha’s name for the position of National List Member of the New Democratic Front.
In a letter to the UNP leader, Party Secretary Shyamala Perera confirmed that Faizer Mustapha’s name would be forwarded to the Election Commission for the position of National List Member.
The letter further states that it had been extremely challenging to reach a consensus regarding the remaining National List MP positions.
Shyamala Perera also highlighted the pressure she was facing from the alliance party leaders and the media.
In response, the political committee of the party convened and discussed the matter.
It was agreed that Faizer Mustapha, should be nominated for the National List vacancy as the choice of the majority of the stakeholders in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
