Parliament has announced that a new Speaker will be appointed on December 17.
A senior parliamentary official stated that, according to the constitution, the Speaker must be appointed on the first day Parliament convenes if the position is vacant.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of Ashoka Ranwala, who stepped down amid controversy over his educational qualifications.
Parliament is scheduled to convene on December 17 and 18.
