The Opposition is set to nominate a candidate for the Speaker’s post on Tuesday when Parliament convenes to elect a successor to Ashoka Ranwala, who resigned last week.
Speaking to the media, SJB MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha acknowledged that the Opposition’s nominee is unlikely to win but emphasized the importance of offering voters a basis for comparison.
“We know we will not be able to get our nominee elected, but we hope to create a situation for the people to compare the candidates. If we had contested for the post on November 21, the people would have said the Opposition’s nominee was better than Ranwala, who falsely claimed a doctorate,” Jayamaha remarked.
