The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thera after he failed to appear in court for the delivery of a judgment in a case filed against him.
When the case was called before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena, neither Gnanasara Thera nor his surety were present in court. However, the defense counsel informed the court that Gnanasara Thera was unable to attend due to receiving medical treatment in a hospital. The court instructed the defense to submit relevant medical reports and set the next hearing for January 9, 2025.
The case was filed by the police against Gnanasara Thera on charges of making a hate speech that allegedly hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka.
Counsel Sanjaya Ariyadasa, with Iresh Seneviratne, Sanjaya Marambe, and Pubudu Wellahewa, represented Gnanasara Thera in court.
