The discussion focused on strategies to enhance anti-money laundering and countering terrorism financing (AML/CFT) measures. Participants included cabinet ministers, ministry secretaries, and officials from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
The FIU outlined the urgent implementation of action plans approved by the cabinet, which involve 24 key institutions, including regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies. These plans aim to address the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations through legal reforms, capacity building, improved inter-agency coordination, and comprehensive record-keeping.
President Dissanayake called for the formation of dedicated teams to ensure compliance and closely monitor progress. He stressed the importance of collaboration and accountability in fortifying Sri Lanka’s AML/CFT framework.
The President highlighted that a robust system is essential not only to secure a positive evaluation but also to ensure financial stability and boost international confidence in the country’s economic standing.
