The National Zoological Gardens Department has reported a remarkable income growth of over 150% compared to 2023, according to its Director General, Ranjana Marasinghe.
Speaking to the media, Marasinghe revealed that the department had generated Rs. 1.42 billion in revenue as of December 23, with projections indicating a potential total of Rs. 2 billion by the year’s end.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage emerged as the top contributor, generating Rs. 876 million, which accounted for 61.4% of the total revenue. The Dehiwala Zoological Gardens followed with 22%, while the Ridiyagama Safari Park and the Pinnawala Open Zoo contributed 9% and 7.5%, respectively.
January, February, March, April, and August saw the highest revenue, with January being the most profitable month.
“We anticipate similar income levels in January 2025 as well,” Marasinghe stated, expressing optimism about the department’s performance in the upcoming year.
