The Ministry of Trade has announced efforts to restore normal rice sales in retail stores, following restrictions imposed by some retailers.
Deputy Minister of Trade, R. M. Jayawardena, stated that retailers have limited rice sales, citing insufficient profit margins. However, he assured the public that there is currently an adequate stock of rice available in the country.
In addition, Dr. Samitha Perera, Chairman of Lanka Sathosa, confirmed that 300 metric tons of rice are being released to the market daily through Lanka Sathosa outlets. He emphasized that this rice is sold at government-controlled prices to ensure affordability for consumers.
The Ministry aims to stabilize the situation promptly to meet consumer demand.
