The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has announced plans to broaden its investigations into online harassment targeting female politicians and political activists.
This initiative follows a review by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and highlights Sri Lanka’s obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The Commission stressed that the government is responsible for preventing violence against women, including online abuse. It has called for immediate action to address inappropriate behavior and insults targeting women on the internet, in accordance with the Women Empowerment Act enacted last year.
This marks a significant step in reinforcing protections for women in the digital sphere.
