Doctors’ Union Alleges Misconduct in SPC Tender Award to Blacklisted Company

The Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights has accused the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) of misconduct for awarding a tender to a blacklisted Bangladeshi company for the supply of disinfectants used in oral hygiene for patients.

Addressing the media today (11), Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, President of the union, condemned the decision, highlighting the controversial nature of the tender process.

“A serious tender transaction has occurred within the SPC in the past few weeks,” Dr. Sanjeewa explained. “Last year in June, the SPC called for tenders to procure 270,000 bottles of oral disinfectant. On December 12, the tender was awarded to the lowest bidder. However, this company had been previously blacklisted by the SPC and barred from further financial dealings. It also owes the Sri Lankan government a surcharge of Rs. 127 million.”

Dr. Sanjeewa emphasized the need for accountability, criticizing the SPC for disregarding its own blacklist policy and engaging with a company under financial scrutiny.

A spokesperson for the SPC, when contacted, stated that an investigation would be required before providing an official response to the allegations.

The matter has raised concerns about procurement practices and transparency within the SPC, with calls for immediate action to address the alleged irregularities.
