Heavy Rainfall Causes 13 Reservoirs to Overflow; Residents Warned of Flood Risks

The Water Management Branch of the Irrigation Department has reported that 13 reservoirs have begun spilling due to heavy rainfall in their catchment areas.

The affected reservoirs include:

  • Mahakandarawa, Mahawilachchiya, Nuwara Wewa, Rajangana
  • Unnichchi, Muruthawela, Weerawila, Ellewela
  • Wemedilla, Mediyawa, Usgala, Ethimale, and Wan Ela

Flood Risk Advisory

Residents and travelers in areas downstream of these reservoirs are urged to remain vigilant for potential sudden floods, as water levels continue to rise.

The increased water levels are primarily due to heavy showers in sea areas extending from Colombo to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar.

Authorities recommend taking precautionary measures to ensure safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
