The first round of discussions between the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on potential collaboration has concluded successfully.
Representatives from both parties have reportedly agreed to contest the upcoming elections as a united front, signaling a significant step toward reunification.
At the previous general elections, the UNP and SJB ran separately, leading to underwhelming outcomes for both parties. This prompted repeated calls from members on both sides to reestablish unity to strengthen their electoral prospects.
In response to these demands, representatives of the UNP and SJB convened at a private hotel in Colombo last night to explore pathways for collaboration.
Key UNP figures, including Ruwan Wijewardene, Thalatha Athukorala, Gayantha Karunathilaka, Harshana Rajakaruna, and several others, participated in the discussions.
The successful outcome of the talks is expected to pave the way for further negotiations as both parties work towards forming a united front for the upcoming elections.
