The Ceylon Chamber of Coconut Industries (CCCI), the apex body representing Sri Lanka’s coconut industry, has urged the government to expedite the proposal to import 200 million coconuts to avert an imminent dual crisis.
A severe coconut shortage has led to soaring prices, with nuts selling at approximately Rs. 200 each, posing significant challenges to both domestic consumers and exporters.
Speaking at an urgent press conference in Colombo, CCCI President Jayantha Samarakoon highlighted the sluggish progress of the import authorization process, which involves multiple ministries and government departments. He emphasized the critical need for immediate action to stabilize the supply chain.
“The current coconut shortage poses a dual crisis for households and exporters. Without immediate action, Sri Lanka risks jeopardizing the livelihoods of thousands while reducing local affordability,” Samarakoon stated.
The CCCI’s appeal underscores the urgency of addressing the issue to protect both the domestic market and the country’s export potential.
