Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and his wife were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (22) over allegations of misappropriating more than Rs. 6.1 million in 2014.
Allegations of Fund Misuse
According to Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga, the former minister allegedly obtained funds from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) under the pretext of providing flood relief to displaced residents in the Bingiriya and Narammala areas. However, the funds were reportedly diverted for activities related to the 2015 presidential election campaign.
The misuse of funds constitutes criminal misappropriation and violations under the Public Properties Act, the spokesman stated.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
The arrests were made following advice from the Attorney General. The former minister and his wife are expected to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (23).
The CID has launched further investigations into the matter to uncover additional details surrounding the allegations.
