TNCC President Defends Indira Gandhi’s Decision on Katchatheevu, Criticizes BJP

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai on Thursday criticized BJP president K Annamalai for his remarks against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi regarding the transfer of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.

In a statement, Selvaperunthagai defended Indira Gandhi’s decision, describing it as a “strategic step.” He highlighted that Katchatheevu, a 285-acre island unfit for human habitation, was ceded under an agreement that also ensured Tamil Nadu fishermen retained the right to fish in the Wage Bank, south of Kanniyakumari, which is under Sri Lankan control.

Selvaperunthagai further questioned the BJP’s role in addressing the challenges faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen, including the arrest of 530 fishermen and the auctioning of 73 boats by Sri Lanka.

“What has the BJP done to stop these actions?” he asked, directly challenging Annamalai’s criticism.

The remarks come amidst ongoing political debates over Katchatheevu and the rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Sri Lankan-controlled waters.
