Sudan Market Attack by Paramilitary Forces Kills 54, Injures 158

A paramilitary attack on the Sabrein Market in Omdurman, Sudan, has left 54 dead and at least 158 injured, according to health authorities.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out the assault amid the ongoing civil war, which has devastated the country since April 2023. Government spokesperson Khalid al-Aleisir condemned the attack, calling it a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law.”

  • Casualties include many women and children.
  • A mortar shell landed near Al-Naw Hospital, which received most victims.
  • The hospital faces critical shortages of medical staff, including surgeons and nurses.

Last week, 70 people were killed in an RSF attack on El Fasher’s only functional hospital in Darfur.

The conflict has killed over 28,000 people, displaced millions, and pushed parts of Sudan toward famine. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating war crimes, while the U.S. has accused the RSF of genocide.

The military has recently regained control of key areas, including Khartoum, Omdurman, and Gezira’s capital, Wad Medani, marking a shift in the war.
