U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended his congratulations to the people of Sri Lanka on behalf of the United States as the island nation marked its 77th Independence Day on Tuesday.
In a statement, Rubio emphasized the strong and mutually beneficial partnership that has developed between the two countries over the past 77 years, founded on people-to-people ties and shared democratic values.
“In the year ahead, we look forward to increasing trade and investment between our countries and strengthening our security cooperation to advance stability and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region,” he stated.
Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung echoed the sentiment in a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), saying, “We join Secretary Rubio in congratulating the people of Sri Lanka on 77 years of Independence and reaffirm the United States’ commitment to addressing our shared challenges and promoting a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.”
