Speaker Yet to Receive Supreme Court Ruling on Local Government Elections Bill

Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced today (Feb. 5) that he has not yet received the Supreme Court’s decision on the petitions challenging the Local Government Elections (Special Provisions) Bill.

His statement came in response to a question raised in Parliament by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Supreme Court concluded hearings on the petitions on January 27 and had stated that its ruling would be confidentially forwarded to both the President and the Speaker.

However, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara questioned the discrepancy, pointing out that Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, claimed during a press conference last week that the Speaker had already received the verdict and would present it to Parliament today.
