Government to Introduce Amendments to Online Safety Act, AG’s Department Informs Court

The Attorney General’s Department has notified the Supreme Court that the incumbent government intends to introduce several new amendments to the Online Safety Act, originally passed by the previous administration.

During today’s (Feb. 5) hearing on four fundamental rights petitions challenging the Act’s legality, Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne appeared on behalf of the Attorney General. The petitions argue that the manner in which the Act was enacted was unlawful.

Among the petitioners is Transparency International Sri Lanka, along with several other parties, who contend that the legislative process for the Act did not adhere to constitutional requirements.

The proposed amendments, announced by the Attorney General’s Department, are expected to address some of the concerns raised in these challenges. Further details on the scope and content of the amendments have not yet been disclosed as the case proceeds in the Supreme Court.
