The Department of Meteorology has warned that the Heat Index—the temperature felt on the human body—is expected to rise to the ‘Caution Level’ tomorrow (Feb. 19) in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Southern Provinces, as well as in the Monaragala and Ratnapura districts.
According to the advisory, under this temperature level, prolonged exposure and physical activity may cause fatigue, while continued exertion could lead to heat cramps.
The public is advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in shaded areas, and limit strenuous outdoor activities. Authorities also urge checking on the elderly and sick, never leaving children unattended in vehicles, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.
The Heat Index Forecast is calculated based on relative humidity and maximum temperature, representing the temperature felt on the body rather than the actual recorded temperature. It is generated using global numerical weather prediction models for the following day.
