Government Committed to Fiscal Discipline – Ravi Karunanayake

United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ravi Karunanayake has affirmed that the current government is adhering to fiscal discipline while steering the economy on a structured and goal-oriented path.

Speaking to the media about the country’s economic direction, Karunanayake emphasized that the government is on a targeted journey, rather than following an unrealistic or idealistic vision.

“The government is indeed working with fiscal discipline. I have mentioned this before. It appears to be on a focused and structured path. While some may have envisioned a different course for the government’s economic policies, the current approach is pragmatic, emphasizing financial discipline.”

Commenting on the impact of vehicle imports on the economy, Karunanayake highlighted the need for a well-planned approach to ensure affordability and public benefit.

“I do not share the popular view on vehicle imports. The well-being of over 20 million citizens is more important than catering to a small segment of around 50,000 people. If vehicles are to be imported, priority should be given to options that benefit the general public. Today, a vehicle worth two million rupees abroad is sold for nearly two hundred million rupees locally. Therefore, imports should be handled carefully to ensure they serve the broader interests of the people.”

His remarks underscore the government’s commitment to financial prudence and responsible economic management, while also advocating for policies that prioritize the needs of the majority.
