A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday morning, with tremors felt in Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal. According to India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 6:10 AM at a depth of 91 km.

An official from the India Meteorological Department reported that the earthquake was recorded near Puri, Odisha, at latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E.

While the tremors caused momentary panic in Kolkata, no reports of damage or casualties have emerged. Social media users quickly reacted, sharing their experiences and checking on others’ safety. Hashtags related to the earthquake briefly trended as people discussed the sudden jolts.

Kolkata falls under Seismic Zone III, indicating a moderate earthquake risk. Though not as seismically active as Northeast India or the Himalayas, the city occasionally experiences tremors due to seismic activity in nearby regions such as the Bay of Bengal and Nepal.
