Election Commission Confirms Voter Eligibility and Nomination Guidelines for Local Government Elections

The Election Commission has announced that individuals who turn 18 by February 1, 2025, will be eligible to vote in the upcoming local government elections. Accordingly, all persons born on or before January 31, 2007, will have the right to cast their vote.

To formalize this decision, the Commission has issued an official Gazette notification under Section 76(a) of the Local Government Elections Ordinance and Section 24(a) of the Voters Registration Act.

Additionally, the Commission has released key details regarding the nomination process, including the number of candidates required for each local government institution and the deposit amounts for contesting the elections.

As per the guidelines, nomination lists must be prepared at both the divisional and proportional levels, with youth representation exceeding 25 percent.

The Commission has also mandated gender representation requirements, ensuring that at least 25 percent of candidates in divisional-level nomination lists are female, while proportional nomination lists must include 50 percent female representation.
