Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises regarding electricity tariff revisions.
Addressing the media, Karunanayake pointed out that while the ruling party had advocated for tariff adjustments while in opposition, it has yet to implement any meaningful changes since coming to power.
He further stated that he had raised the issue in Parliament, emphasizing that the ongoing dry weather has reduced hydropower generation, increasing reliance on costly thermal power. As a result, electricity production costs have surged.
Karunanayake urged the government to clarify how it plans to address this challenge without burdening consumers with higher tariffs.
