Former Speaker and Minister Chamal Rajapaksa has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections, representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Responding to a journalist’s question on why he is contesting the LG elections despite his past high-ranking roles, Rajapaksa stated, “That’s very normal. We have our ups and downs – so, I am starting again from the beginning.”
He further noted that he would contest from anywhere within the Hambantota District, based on party requests.
Rajapaksa, the eldest brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, emphasized the strong representation of youth and women in the district’s candidate lineup. “Given the current demand, we’re putting forward a strong group of young candidates, along with women and experienced individuals like us,” he added.
