Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Madura Seneviratne, has acknowledged that the declining enrollment of children in Grade 1 is a significant issue.
Responding to a question raised in Parliament by MP Ravi Karunanayake, the Deputy Minister confirmed that the government is aware of the situation and has already held discussions to address the problem.
He identified the declining birth rate and various social factors as key contributors to the drop in enrollments.
MP Ravi Karunanayake had earlier pointed out that Grade 1 enrollments have dropped from 421,000 in 2015 to 279,000, highlighting the need for urgent government intervention.
