A Police Constable from the Special Protection Division and a civilian from Thalawathugoda have been arrested for allegedly assisting suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon in evading authorities, the Police Spokesman confirmed.
Tennakoon, who was wanted in connection with a shooting near a hotel in Weligama in 2023, had an arrest warrant issued against him. He surrendered to court on March 19 after avoiding capture for nearly 20 days.
Following his surrender, Tennakoon was remanded until April 3 and is currently being held at Dumbara Prison in Kandy.
The Matara Magistrate’s Court had earlier ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including former members of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and Tennakoon, identifying them as suspects in the December 31, 2023, shooting outside the W15 Hotel in Weligama, Matara.
