Police officers will now be able to issue multiple charge sheets for traffic violations, thanks to the introduction of an online instant fine payment system via the ‘GovPay’ application, according to Harsha Purasinghe, a board member of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department, Purasinghe said the system was introduced at the request of the Sri Lanka Police. The new platform enables motorists to pay fines instantly by entering the reference number on the charge sheet.
He explained that all police stations have now been equipped with mobile phones linked to the system. Once a charge sheet is issued, the responsible officer will receive an acknowledgement upon payment, allowing them to promptly return the driver’s license.
Under the current procedure, motorists must take their charge sheets to a post office, make the payment, and submit the receipt to the police station to reclaim their driving license. The new system eliminates this time-consuming process.
Purasinghe also noted that since the system allows for instant payment of multiple fines, police officers will now be able to issue additional charge sheets for multiple violations committed by a single driver.
Effective from April 11, the online instant fine payment system via GovPay marks a significant step in the digital transformation of the Sri Lanka Police. A pilot project will be implemented from April 11 to April 30, 2025, covering roads in Kurunegala, Doratiyawa, Melsiripura, Gokarella, Galewela, Dambulla, Madatugama, Maradankadawala, Kekirawa, Thirappane, Kawarakkulama, and Anuradhapura.
The Sri Lanka Police stated that the pilot project aims to identify any shortcomings or inconveniences during the initial implementation phase. Once addressed, the system is expected to be rolled out nationwide.
