Ravi Karunanayake Questions IMF Statement

The most urgent need for the country at this time is to encourage investment and attract investors, says UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake stressed that investment is crucial for a country striving to recover from bankruptcy. He also emphasized that the best way to free the country from debt is by developing its export sector.

The MP commented on a recent statement by Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who said that Sri Lanka must focus on diversifying its export markets and creating an investment-friendly environment to maintain stability and growth.

Karunanayake pointed out that such remarks should be formally discussed with the IMF by the country’s authorities.

He further noted that exports and investments cannot be effectively promoted without offering concessions, and called for appropriate measures to be taken in consultation with the Fund.
