Authorities Ramp Up Crackdown on University Ragging After Student Death at Sabaragamuwa

Authorities are intensifying efforts to curb ragging in Sri Lankan universities following the recent death of a second-year student at the Faculty of Technology, Sabaragamuwa University.

A high-level discussion held yesterday (May 5) between university vice-chancellors and officials from the University Grants Commission (UGC) underscored the need for stronger police involvement in addressing ragging-related incidents.

UGC Chairman, Professor Kapila Senaviratne, stressed the urgent need to establish a robust legal framework to combat ragging and ensure the safety of students across all campuses.

The incident at Sabaragamuwa University has triggered multiple investigations. Four third-year students from the Faculty of Technology were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and are scheduled to appear before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court today.

An additional four third-year students, arrested earlier in connection with the case, have been remanded until May 16.

The deceased student reportedly died under suspicious circumstances believed to be linked to ragging. The CID and other relevant authorities are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of death and identify those responsible.

The tragedy has reignited nationwide concern over the persistence of ragging in higher education institutions and highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive and systemic reforms to eradicate the practice.
