The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory warning of severe lightning in several parts of the country.
Thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are expected in the Central, Uva, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during these thundershowers, the department said.
The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of lightning-related hazards. Authorities advise seeking shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoiding open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies.
Additionally, the public is cautioned against using wired telephones and plugged-in electrical appliances during lightning activity.
For emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact their local disaster management authorities.
