Tragedy Strikes Newly Appointed Kalawana Councillor Sujeewa Pushpakumara

Kalawana, June 2 – In a heartbreaking incident, Sujeewa Pushpakumara, a newly sworn-in member of the Kalawana Pradeshiya Sabha, died today after being electrocuted in a tragic accident.

The incident occurred in the Delgoda Colony area, just a day after Pushpakumara officially took his oath of office as a councillor under the Sarvajana Balaya party.

According to the Kalawana Police, Pushpakumara was attempting to remove a tree branch near a high-voltage power line when he accidentally came into contact with live electricity. He was immediately rushed to the Kalawana Base Hospital, but was pronounced dead on admission.

Reports indicate that the councillor had been engaged in contract-based tree pruning work at the time of the incident — highlighting the risks associated with such manual labor near power lines.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Pushpakumara’s sudden passing has cast a shadow over the newly convened local council, and condolences are pouring in from fellow councillors, political leaders, and members of the community.
