Colombo, Sri Lanka – June 16, 2025 – The ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance has announced its decision to support the candidate nominated by Opposition parties for the post of Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council during today’s crucial vote.
Parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera, leader of Sarvajana Balaya, stated that the alliance’s Executive Committee had unanimously resolved to vote against the candidate fielded by the National People’s Power (NPP).
The newly elected Colombo Municipal Council is set to hold its inaugural sitting this morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Hall, following the local government elections conducted on May 6. The proceedings are being held in accordance with a Gazette Extraordinary issued by Sarangika Jayasundara, Commissioner of the Department of Local Government of the Western Province.
The election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be the first order of business at the inaugural session.
With no single party securing an outright majority in the 117-member council, both the National People’s Power (NPP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have been engaged in last-minute negotiations to form a coalition and secure enough votes to clinch the top posts.

To establish control in the council, a minimum of 59 votes is required.
As political maneuvering reaches its peak, the outcome of today’s vote will determine not only the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Colombo but also the balance of power within one of Sri Lanka’s most influential local authorities.
