Colombo, Sri Lanka – June 16, 2025 – The Election Commission has announced that the names of 2,400 local government candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports will be forwarded to the police for legal action.
Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake stated that the police will initiate further proceedings based on legal guidance from the Attorney General.
As per the Commission, a total of 7,690 candidates have complied with the legal requirement by submitting their financial statements following the May 6 local government elections.
However, concerningly, 223 elected members have yet to submit their income and expenditure declarations, raising serious questions about transparency and compliance among newly elected representatives.
The local government election held in early May saw the National People’s Power (NPP) securing a majority of local government institutions across the country, marking a significant shift in the local political landscape.
The Election Commission emphasized that non-submission of financial reports is a legal offense, and strict action will be taken to ensure accountability in the democratic process.
