NPP Secures Majority Control in 18 Local Government Bodies

From June 12 to the end of June 16, the National People’s Power (NPP) has gained control of 18 out of 23 local government institutions established through the intervention of the Local Government Commissioners.

This political shift began with victories at the Bandarawela Municipal Council and the Uva Paranagama Pradeshiya Sabha. At that point, it was widely reported that various opposition parties had entered into secret agreements aimed at countering the NPP.

Despite these efforts, opposition leaders remained confident. Speaking at a press conference held last week, several opposition party heads claimed that their alliance would secure control of all local bodies where the NPP had failed to secure a 50% majority.

However, contrary to those claims, the opposition’s setbacks have only worsened. The NPP has now succeeded in gaining power in 18 out of the 23 local government institutions where it did not initially hold an outright majority.
