The National People’s Power (NPP) has secured another significant local government victory after a 17–17 tie in the vote for the chairmanship of the Dehiowita Pradeshiya Sabha was resolved through a draw of lots.
NPP candidate Samanasiri Weerasinghe was declared chairman after the tie-breaking draw favoured him over Damidu Shaminda of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The rare draw became necessary after both candidates received equal votes during the internal council election. The decision was made in accordance with official electoral procedures, which call for a lot draw in the event of a tie.
This win further strengthens the NPP’s growing presence in local government bodies across the country.
