Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for adopting what he described as an oppressive global policy stance during his tenure.
In an interview with ceylonwire.lk, Karunanayake said that Trump did not limit his confrontational approach to rival nations but extended it to the international community at large.
He particularly referenced the trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on several countries, which he said were unjustified and later suspended by a U.S. court.
“Trump had specific issues with countries like China, Mexico, and Canada,” Karunanayake noted, “but he should have avoided dragging smaller, developing nations into those conflicts.”
He added that a true global leader would have acted with greater responsibility and ensured that vulnerable countries were not unfairly impacted. “Imposing hardline decisions on the entire world was inappropriate and lacked diplomatic foresight,” he said.
