Sri Lanka Must Prepare to Navigate U.S. Trade Policy – Ravi Karunanayake

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, says Sri Lanka must be ready to adapt to evolving U.S. trade decisions, particularly in light of the tariff measures introduced during the Trump administration.

Speaking to CeylonWire.lk, Karunanayake noted that while legal debates continue over the legitimacy of these new tariffs, Sri Lanka’s priority should be to strategically respond rather than remain passive.

“What Sri Lanka needs to focus on is reducing the trade deficit and increasing access to the U.S. export market,” he said.

He emphasized that the current environment presents a strong opportunity for Sri Lanka to boost its production aimed at exports, especially in light of growing trade dynamics between the two countries.

Karunanayake also highlighted that Sri Lanka has been working to expand its export capacity by leveraging existing ties with India, suggesting regional partnerships can support broader global trade ambitions.
