Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has emphasized the importance of enhancing economic cooperation with India, especially in the face of global trade challenges such as tariffs imposed by the United States.
Speaking in an interview with CeylonWire.lk, Karunanayake noted that the existing trade agreement between India and Sri Lanka allows for duty-free exports of Sri Lankan goods to the Indian market—a valuable opportunity in the current economic context.
He stressed that Sri Lanka must take advantage of its close relationship with India to expand its export base and minimize the impact of U.S. tariffs on local industries.
“What Sri Lanka needs right now is to boost exports while narrowing the trade deficit,” the MP stated, urging policymakers to prioritize trade diversification and regional partnerships.
